Field of Teaching: »Design and Media Theory«
Why do some products feel familiar while others seem foreign? What lies behind a pictogram that everyone understands? How do materials, media, new software, and technologies influence design? The “Design and Media Theory” program focuses on reflecting on design practice and responsibility in the context of societal developments. Those who design make decisions that create meaning, shape cultures, and influence people. Product semantics, cultural semiotics, and applied design research provide approaches and concepts for understanding and questioning these effects. Design theory is not the antithesis of practice, but rather its fundamental component: After all, those who think conceptually and possess theoretical background knowledge design better.
