Photography and Identity
CareerLotte Reimann identifies as a non-binary person who tells multimedia stories and enjoys research just as much as teaching. Lotte studied photography at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, obtained a BA in Fine Art from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 2011, and was a fellow at the renowned Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht in 2019.
Since 2011, Lotte has been working as a freelance artist in the field of visual art, creating (auto)biographical narratives about human desire that subvert the colonial concept of the fetish – the marginalising gaze directed at ‘the Other’. The hierarchies of power between author and subject originally inherent in this perspective are made explicit and continually renegotiated. Found and self-created images, texts and sounds are combined into open-ended narratives that oscillate between sociological research and artistic speculation. The exploration of the relationships between humans and non-humans – such as water, stones, plants, animals and other man-made objects – runs like a common thread through the investigations, which are then presented in large-scale installations as well as in books and films.
Her artistic photographic works have been exhibited or acquired by international institutions such as the MoMA Library in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, De Appel in Amsterdam, the Fotomuseum Winterthur, the Museum Folkwang, Rencontres d’Arles, the Museum Arnhem, Chelsea UAL, the Museum Marta Herford, FOAM in Amsterdam and the Fotomuseum Rotterdam. In 2022, Lotte’s work was awarded the Museum Folkwang’s ‘Contemporary German Photography’ grant, and in 2016 she received the Dutch ‘C.o.C.A. Foundation Art Prize’.
Between 2019 and 2024, Lotte held various temporary teaching contracts at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and the University of Hildesheim. Since 2025, Lotte has held the chair in ‘Photography and Identity’ at Hochschule München.
