Modular structure.
The degree programmes offered by the Department of Design are modular. All first semester students, regardless of their future core field, learn about the fundamentals of design in five modules. These topics include drawing, photography, typography and interaction. The structure then becomes more open, and the teaching of the basics builds on content that applies specifically to the particular core field.
Starting in the second semester, students may select from modules that will expand and deepen their knowledge. These courses may be selected regardless of an individual student’s particular core field. The elective project instruction begins in the third semester. This coursework combines practical work with theoretical-conceptional principles. The fifth semester is an 18-week topic-focused practicum. The preparation of a bachelor’s thesis and a final examination are usually done during the seventh semester.
