Bachelor’s degree programme in design
The bachelor’s degree programme in design is a well-grounded degree programme that provides students with the array of design, technical and conceptual skills they need to find their place in a demanding work world. The degree programme offers three core fields: photo design, industrial design and communication design. All three draw on one another in an interdisciplinary process. These core fields also offer additional specialisation opportunities, including transportation design, corporate design/branding, interaction design and fashion photography.
Why should you attend our courses?
Design is a subject that is taught and brought to life very differently at other university departments and institutions of higher learning. In light of the constantly changing demands being placed on designers – the boundaries between media and the disciplines of design are increasingly being erased – we at the Munich University of Applied Sciences offer two ways for students to focus their own degree programmes: The first option is a clear specialisation on a particular sub-area of design (e.g., interaction design, editorial design, fashion photography, typography, among other areas). The second option is an interdisciplinary (generalist) degree programme. All instruction focuses on the six focal areas of the department.
The skills that we teach as part of the bachelor’s degree programme in design include: perception, fundamental theoretical knowledge, a feel for design, conceptual work, process-oriented work, craftsmanship and technical skills, presentation, mistake culture, ability to respond positively to criticism and team work.
Skills are acquired only by doing things, thinking and reflecting, through team work and experimentation. For this reason, the department focuses strongly on project-based instruction and cooperative, open instructional methods. The main focus of instruction is frequently a specific problem that is linked to project partnerships with companies or cultural institutions.
